Nea Smyrni Stadium |
Capacity: 11,700 (seated) |
Location: |
The
stadium is located in Nea Smyrni, a district first inhabited by refugees
that came from Smyrna of Asia Minor in 1922. Nea Smyrni is about 4
km south of the centre of Athens. Exit the city centre via Syngrou
Avenue, which leads to the sea. Nea Smyrni lies to your left. You
have to turn right, left and again left, to pass under Syngrou, following
the signs reading "Nea Smyrni - Exit 2". Continue
straight ahead at the first traffic lights after the underpass and
after 50m turn right into Vyzantiou Street. Go on for about 500m and
then turn left into Kairi Street; you will see the main stand of the
stadium in front of you.
|
Since
it is rather difficult to drive there by yourself, your best shot
would be to use a bus: #106 from Athens (board it outside
"Sygrou - Fix" metro station) and #130 from Piraeus both
stop right outside the stadium. You may also use the tram
to get there, as the line that connects the Athens city centre with
the seafront goes through Nea Smyrni. However, this option involves
some walking. Get off at "Megalou Alexandrou" stop, from
where you will have to walk a distance of about 700m to the stadium
(ask anyone for directions).

More
data: The stadium used to have a capacity of about 20,000 until
the installation of seats in the late 1990s. It has a horseshoe-like
shape, without a northern stand. The south curve is a double-tiered
stand that is usually allocated to away fans, however its upper tier
has not been used for many years because of structural problems that
have been discovered.
The stadium has been upgraded in recent years. The Panionios shop as well as a VIP lounge with view of the pitch were both constructed below the main west stand in 2001. Further works were carried out in 2003, the most important of which was the new roof over the same stand. Finally, you may see the first and last photos featured on this page in their full size. |
Nea Smyrni Stadium is owned by the Panionios G.S. amateur club. |
